A Few Hours on the Overpass

A Few Hours on the Overpass

The pedestrian overpass at Kansas City Union Station is a great safe place to hang out and railfan when in town. I had the opportunity to do just that during the afternoon on September 19th in 2022 while in town on a business trip. I began by capturing a few photos along the way to the overpass from the front entrance where this view was taken of the main hall.

To my left from this photo is the now mainly deserted concourse that led to the many sets of stairs that led down to the boarding platforms at track level.

The door to the pedestrian overpass is down in the far left corner and on the way there I looked back towards the entrance hall.

Down at the far end of the concourse on the right side the train identification boards for the KCS “Flying Crow” and the MKT “Katy Flyer” have been preserved in place above what used to be Track 16.

Out on the overpass the first train I caught was a westbound BNSF merchandise.

After a bit an eastbound BNSF merchandise train rolled through.

Amtrak Train 311 the “Missouri River Runner” from St. Louis pulled into their dedicated track two minutes early at 1:48 pm.

Before long an eastbound intermodal swept by as Patrick Henry’s private cars rested in the station tracks on the left.

As the intermodal continued to stream by, the now empty Amtrak train left heading west to wye the consist for its return trip to St. Louis as Train 319 at 3:11 pm.

After Amtrak was out of sight another eastbound BNSF train came through.

This eastbound had a single DPU bringing up the rear.

Having successfully changed directions, Amtrak arrived back at the depot.

The seven car train was led by a single Siemens SC44 Charger locomotive, something we have yet to see back in Fort Worth.

The overpass never disappoints anytime I have been there, and this visit was no exception!
