Late Afternoon in Saginaw

Late Afternoon in Saginaw

On Sunday May 3rd 2026 it was rumored there would be an Alliance to Temple train late in the day with nine new Tren Maya ES44’s from the Wabtec plant on their way to Mexico. I drove up to Saginaw in hopes of catching them passing the Kosse depot where the evening light would be good. Listening to the radio there was a Alliance to San Bernardino “Z” train about to go around the connection from the Fort Worth Sub to the Wichita Falls Sub.

I figured the late afternoon light would be good for this train after it moved to the Wichita Falls Sub since it would not pass me at the depot. I was ready at what used to be the grade crossing for Cranz Farms when the train came into view and I saw it had an interesting consist with two rare red and silver warbonnets included. the track in the foreground is the UP Duncan Sub.

Arriving back at the depot I spotted a coyote at the base of the signal on the other side of both mainlines and managed one quick photo before it disappeared back into the tall grass.

After the coyote sighting things were quiet for an hour before a southbound merchandise train passed the site where the old diamond crossings were removed two years ago.

One graffiti car stood out in the train.

A few minutes later a loaded coal train arrived off the Wichita Falls Sub.

The rearmost DPU was that has a Northern Pacific decal applied to it. I am not sure of the story behind this.

As the sun set a phone call came in that made it apparent the new locomotives would not be on the train today. Time to head home and try again another day.
