Big Canyon Past and Present

Big Canyon Past and Present

When I lived in Ardmore and Springer, Oklahoma back in the 1970’s I tried to spend as much time as possible around nearby Big Canyon between Dougherty and Gene Autry on the Santa Fe. Here are three of my slide scans from those days.

Thanks to the efforts of friend Dwane Stevens, the Dolese Company that has owned the land in this area on the east side of the Washita River and operated the rock loadout here at Crusher has hosted railfans on their property on certain weekends once or twice a year. In the past I have missed these events, but this year on Saturday November 18th I was able to attend the full 8:00 am to 4:00 pm event with about a dozen other participants.

I am getting too old to act like the mountain goat I used to be to climb these hills and/or cross the river if it was low. For this visit I used my DSLR some, but mainly flew the drone to places that I could never reach by foot almost 50 years ago. Here is a link to my photos from that day on Flickr:

So click and enjoy! Thanks again to Dwane Stevens and Dolese’s staff at Big Canyon!
