It was very foggy around Mumford, TX on the morning of February 6 in 2023 and I was glad I had driven down the evening before on a business trip. Friend Troy Minnick came with me to help, and during breaks from working we caught a few trains during the day. First up we saw a southbound approaching Mumford at the south end of UP’s Brazos Yard site at 8:06 am.
As the headlight loomed out of the fog we were not sure is the train was going to bear right onto the Navasota Sub for Houston or left onto the Giddings Sub towards San Antonio. A southbound freight was tied down in the Mumford passing siding on the right.
The train was an intermodal and wound up going down the Giddings Sub towards San Antonio.
At 1:04 pm we saw another southbound, this time a grain train taking the Giddings Sub.
This train had a singe DPU pushing as the head end was approaching Varisco.
Another grain train passed a local farmer’s tractor as it started down the Giddings Sub at 1:27 pm.
After work as we headed back north on the way home, we captured another southbound at 2:10 PM that had just leaft Hearne and was led by a KCS unit.
In west Hearne before turning north on Highway 7 we stopped on the side of Highway 79 to photograph these three GATX switchers parked at their tank car repair facility.
Passing through Calvert north of Hearne at 2:55 pm, we photographed a southbound on the Ennis Sub led by a SD70ACe. On the right is an old house that is or was functioning as a B&B while on the left are the remains of recently replaced grade crossing signals.
Not far behind at 3:21 pm was an additional southbound led by a second SD70ACe. I framed this photo just to the north of the previous location to include on the right a tree overhanging a nice home with a large side porch.
After this train, Troy and I headed back to Fort Worth with a dinner stop in Waco.
