Sand at Sunset

On Tuesday January 26th I got word a loaded frac sand train from the KCS would be running over the Fort Worth & Western to be delivered to Texas Pacifico for unloading in southwest Texas. It was late in the day when the train approached my location along Winscott Plover Road east of Cresson. I decided to use the drone to best show the length of the train along with the shadows as sunset approached and the moon was rising above the clouds.

The roughly 100-car train certainly had a mix of railroads represented in its 2 x 3 locomotive distribution. I heard a Fort Worth & Western train would be heading east back to Fort Worth as soon as the loaded sand train passed it in Cresson. I decided to wait for it hoping it would pass before sunset, after which I would be legally obligated to land the drone since I had no strobe lights attached. As it tuned out a few minutes later I captured the perfect view.

I swiveled the drone to the right for one more view of the train pulled by four of FWWR’s immaculate SD40-2’s.

I landed the drone before the sun was below the horizon and headed home happy with the results of my short trip. The cloud bank in the background of the sunset photo would bring rain to our house a few hours later.
